In this article, researcher Larah Victória dos Santos draws on her lived experience and observations of food practices in a Candomblé terreiro in Cachoeiras de Macacu, a municipality in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Through her analysis of food traditions and health‑maintenance practices within Afro‑Brazilian communities, combined with a close reading of the works of José Flávio Pessoa de Barros (in memoriam)—babalorixá, teacher, anthropologist, and writer—she recovers knowledge and practices that can strengthen nutritional literacy and promote food security for the Brazilian population.
