The BRICS+ Summit in Rio de Janeiro: the rise and alternative role of the BRICS in the current international relations cenario

The XVII BRICS+ Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro in 2025, represented a milestone in the political and strategic consolidation of cooperation among the main emerging economies of the Global South. Under Brazil's presidency, the meeting reaffirmed the bloc's commitment to sustainable development, multipolarity, and inclusive global governance, highlighting issues such as energy transition, technological innovation, trade in local currencies, reform of multilateral institutions, and the strengthening of South-South cooperation. The analysis demonstrates that BRICS+ has been transforming from a predominantly economic alliance into a political actor of growing relevance within the international system, promoting a reconfiguration of global hierarchies and proposing alternatives to the Western hegemonic model. From this perspective, it became evident that BRICS+, by fostering solidarity and balance among the nations of the Global South, is consolidating itself as a driving force of a new geopolitical paradigm based on equity, autonomy, and shared governance.
