Between Promises and Asymmetries: The Mercosur–European Union Agreement in Light of Its Trajectory and Its Legal and Political Challenges


In light of the signing of the free trade agreement between the heads of state of Mercosur and the European Commission at the end of 2024, and against a backdrop marked by geopolitical tensions, socio-environmental pressures and inter-regional economic disputes, the debate surrounding the terms, impacts and limitations of this partnership returns to the forefront of the international agenda. The agreement, negotiated over more than two decades, reflects structural inequalities between the blocs and raises questions concerning sovereignty, economic dependency, and the scope of the commitments undertaken in areas such as trade, the environment and development. This article proposes a critical analysis of its historical trajectory, legal foundations, and the competing interests that shape its formulation and implementation.
